Appreciating and Supporting Neurodiversity in VET 

Career Progression

The issue 

This initiative stems from the recognition of neurodiversity as an asset rather than a deficit, acknowledging the diverse ways individuals experience and interact with the world.

With an estimated 10% of New Zealand's population being neurodiverse, there is untapped potential to address the challenges they face in education and employment, particularly within key industries experiencing skill shortages. 

These challenges are industry-agnostic, hence the proposal for a joint venture between ConCoVE and Food and Fibre CoVE. 

Intended outcomes 

  • An analysis of the current literature and practices of supporting neurodiverse workers and learners domestically and internationally in a wider setting as well as any information from a construction, infrastructure, food & fibre setting.  
  • An analysis of the current literature and practices of supporting neurodiverse workers and learners domestically and internationally utilising culture/gender. 
  • Proposals for training in education and work with regards to ND and how best to support them especially with regards to assessment design, learning design, and presentation of other materials.  
  • Proposals for training in education and work with all learners/staff to understand what ND is and what approaches can benefit them.  
  • Proposals for training in education and work using a cultural and gender lens.  
  • Proposals for supporting those with ND in strategies to empower themselves to learn and work.   

The steps 

  • Desktop research – June 2024 
  • Consultation with stakeholders on approaches and methodologies – August 2024 
  • Final report with recommendations for pilot delivery – November 2024

Food and Fibre CoVE invests in the transformation of vocational education and training (VET) to enable Aotearoa New Zealand’s food and fibre sector to thrive. With a pan-sector lens, we focus on the collective needs and shared goals of the sector, enabling change in VET by uncovering opportunities for improving performance through research and insights, and the exploration of lifelong workplace learning.
