A Case Study: Augmented reality in welding training

The goal of this case study is to share the story of a local group apprenticeship organisation, ATNZ in using Augmented Reality (AR) in its welding apprenticeship programme.

ATNZ has purchased six welding simulators to train apprentices in welding, with very successful results.

AR is complementary to the role of the trainers and this case study will explore the role of trainers in the context of virtual reality delivery.

The issue

Globally there are significant developments in the use of technologyNew Zealand lags behind in the adoption of some of the cutting-edge practices currently occurring overseas.

Intended outcomes

Some of the benefits of using AR to train apprentices include:

  • Reduce time to train – from one month to two weeks for an absolute beginner
  • Offers training at a suitable pace for learners – learners can go back and repeat as they need to
  • Reduce costs and waste - the materials that apprentices use to practice on are industry materials that are expensive and then end up the rubbish. AR reduces the time to train so offers cost savings on materials and reduces waste
  • Real time feedback is an effective training method – is clear and precise
  • Welding is dangerous. AR offers a safer way to train.
  • Apprentices are highly engaged in AR delivery.

The steps

Step one:

  • Interviews with apprentices, trainers and employers.
  • Systems change lens to identify the exact changes in the system required to see wider adoption of this approach.

Step two:

  • Draft report

Step three:

  • Final report
