The New Zealand Quarrying Industry’s Possible Futures Toward 2030

Using a DELPHI and PESTEL study, this research aims to predict the trends that will impact the quarrying industry to guide quarrying practice, inform vocational education, and strategic policy direction. 

The issue:

The concept of foresight is becoming an issue for leaders and managers across the New Zealand quarrying industry and the world. The lack of foresight was evident with the industry’s response to COVID-19. With the current qualifications focusing on the technical skills, there is a need to identify the workforce needs to support the development of educational products that will support the industry to meet those needs. 

Intended outcomes:

Strategic Objectives Achieved: 

  • Develop 3 scenarios from the data and information collected from the DELPHI and PESTEL.   
  • The development a suite of recommendations and associated strategies 

The steps

Step 1 >
To complete a DELPHI Study with those in the quarrying industry to identify the issues.

Step 2 >
To carry out a PESTEL (Political, Economic, Social, Technology, Environment, Legal) using current literature and results from the DELPHI study 

Step 3 >
To develop three scenarios from the data and information collected from the DELPHI and PESTEL.   

Step 4 >

The development a suite of recommendations and associated strategies for the quarrying industry.
